Artemisinin is the active compound of sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua). Many years ago it was already used in China for the treatment of malaria. Its mechanism of action is based on inducing programmed cell death in cells with unusually high iron content (cells infected with malaria contain significantly more iron than healthy cells).
Scientific literature and clinical studies related to the emergence of COVID-19 have demonstrated that sweet wormwood also has significant antiviral and antibacterial effects. Researchers in the United States have shown that extracts of the medicinal plant Artemisia annua inhibit the replication of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
The production of artemisinin is protected by a proprietary patent.
